Step by step Fresh peach cobbler recipe from scratch with photo of each step. There are some foods that are just too perfect to be true. Like, this Southern Fresh Peach Cobbler made from scratch. This is super simple. The ingredients are all handy except for fresh peaches which are seasonal produce.

Origin

Peach cobbler is deep southern dessert from America brought there by early British settlers. There are many version and all are different but delicious.

Cobbler, we know is a shoe maker. Here, Cobbler comes from the word ‘Cobble’ which means to put something together clumsily. Since, biscuit topping is dotted clumsily, may be that’s why. And when you'll follow this recipe, you just need to cobble these ingredients nicely and you've got a perfect dessert.

This peach cobbler is very moist, sweet, has somewhat cake like texture but chewy, delicious sides. The sweetness of peach filling peaks through cake like crust. The walnut in the topping give you a chew here and there and cinnamon, is my personal favorite spice. You can skip cinnamon if you don't like peach and cinnamon combo. Since, some cobbler have crispy biscuit topping, this one is not like biscuit.

This dessert is a crowd pleasure, something, I would compare with Gajar ka Halwa. You must be raising one eye at my comparison with Gajar ka Halwa. Since, it is quite heavy with butter and flour and sweet like Halwa. It taste best when warm like Halwa. And, it taste great with vanilla ice cream like Gajar Halwa.

Types of peaches

Since, it is main ingredient, use best peaches. Reduce sugar if peaches are naturally very sweet and ripened. If using, over-ripened peaches, you may skip cooking peaches on pan and just mix the sugar and peaches. Set aside for 15 minute and you are set. I used thick peach wedges, but I suggest chunk would be best. If you don’t like big chunk then you can make thin wedges.

Serving Suggestions

One more thing this cobbler is quite filling. I can skip my meal after having it. So, if you plan it for a gathering along with a savory dish and a main course, and two sides, like a salad and a soup or raita, I would suggest to keep small serving sizes.

So, if you are hosting a group of 12-16 people of mixed appetite. Divide the peach in two large plates and serve with ½ litre scoops of vanilla ice cream all around the peach cobbler in each plate. I will upload a photo when I make it again. For single servings, you can make it in ramekins too, which means crispy crust in every bite. Yumm!

How to make it?

Step by step Fresh peach cobbler recipe from scratch

Preheat oven at  375 C. Melt butter in baking dish by placing dish in oven for few minutes. Butter is melted, set aside.

Take peaches in pan. (I also added few grapes. You may add berries.)

Mix in sugar and lemon juice. Cook on medium flame with stirring until sugar is melted and syrup is boiling.

Peach filling is ready. Set aside.

Mix sugar, flour and baking powder in a bowl.

Add milk.

Add egg and mix well to form a runny batter.

Pour batter over butter.

Spoon  peach filling over batter. Do not mix, the batter will rise itself upon baking.

Sprinkle cinnamon and walnut on top. (Sorry for the messy image.)

Place in oven and bake for 40-45 minutes until top is golden. (Actually. I forgot to add cinnamon in previous step and took out the dish from oven to add topping.)
